April 9, 2019 — Students at ReNEW Dolores T. Aaron Academy (DTA) are working on final rehearsals for their upcoming Spring Concert, set for April 17 at 6:30 PM. The event will feature the DTA Concert Band, DTA “Young Heroes” Brass Band, and guest artists ranging from the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra’s NOJO 7 to Preservation Hall’s Kevin Louis. The 60 students in the DTA Band Program have been preparing for this night the entire school year, and are excited to showcase their talents.
For 8th grader Michael Woodcox, the show will be especially memorable, as he’s the lone remaining member of the original DTA Band. When the DTA band program began five years ago, Michael was the only 3rd grader involved and the youngest member of the band. Now, he stands as the group’s drum major and most senior member. The April 17th performance will be Michael’s last in a 5-year stretch that saw him help establish and build the band program’s foundation. DTA Band Director Andy Bower has worked with Michael every step of the way, and is also brimming with anticipation for this special show.
